چکیده
Design automation or computer-aided design (CAD) for microelectronic circuits has emerged since the creation of integrated circuits (IC). It has played a crucial role to enable the rapid development of hardware and software systems in the past several decades. CAD techniques are the key driving forces behind the reduction of circuit design time and the optimization of circuit quality. Meanwhile, the exponential growth of circuit capacity driven by Moore’s law prompts new and critical challenges for CAD techniques. Moore’s law describes an important trend in the history of the semiconductor industry: that the number of transistors per unit chip area would be doubled approximately every 2 years. This observation was first made by Intel co-founder Gordon E. Moore in a paper in 1965. Moore’s law has held true for the past four decades, and many people believe that it will continue to apply for at least another decade before reaching the fundamental physical limits of device fabrication. In this chapter we will introduce the fundamentals of design automation as an engineering field. We begin with several important processor 38.1 Overview.............................................. 653 38.1.1 Background on Microelectronic Circuits ............. 653 38.1.2 History of Electronic Design Automation .... 656

An overview of today's high-level synthesis tools
High-level synthesis (HLS) is an increasingly popular approach in electronic design automation (EDA) that raises the abstraction level for designing digital circuits. With the increasing complexity of embedded systems, these tools are particularly relevant in embedded systems design. In this paper, we present our evaluation of a broad selection of recent HLS tools in terms of capabilities, usab...

متن کاملA co-synthesis approach to embedded system design automation
Embedded systems are targeted for speci c applications under constraints on relative timing of their actions. For such systems, use of predesigned reprogrammable components such as microprocessors provides an e ective way to reduce system cost by implementing part of the functionality as a program running on the processor. Dedicated hardware is often necessary to achieve requisite timing perfor...
متن کاملRetargetable Code Generation Based on Structural Processor Description
Design automation for embedded systems comprising both hardware and software components demands for code generators integrated into electronic CAD systems. These code generators provide the necessary link between software synthesis tools in HW/SW codesign systems and embedded processors. General-purpose compilers for standard processors are often insufficient, because they do not provide flexib...
متن کاملIntermediate Representations for Design Automation of Multiprocessor DSP Systems
Self-timed scheduling is an attractive implementation style for multiprocessor DSP systems due to its ability to exploit predictability in application behavior, its avoidance of over-constrained synchronization, and its simplified clocking requirements. However, analysis and optimization of selftimed systems under real-time constraints is challenging due to the complex, irregular dynamics of se...
